Ecotherapy Retreat

We see ourselves as guardians of nature and the natural environment of Dolifor and seek to enhance the life of all species that choose to share this environment with us. We can act as your guide in this natural environment and the wider environment of the Elan Valley and The Cambrian Mountains.

The Cambrian Mountains are one of Wales' best-kept secrets, nestled between Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons. This is one of the few remote areas left in Southern Britain that can boast the lowest levels of light pollution, and one of the few places left where we can escape the sounds of traffic. It is a beautiful and remote region, taking in sweeping landscapes and a rich cultural history that have inspired artists and writers alike.

From the high ground there are seemingly endless and colourful vistas, dotted with small jewelled lakes. Its strong sense of openness, wildness and variety of habitats characterises the area - across the mountains there are bogs, heather moors and lakes of the uplands down to the native woodlands and tumbling rivers in the valleys below, some of which lead to some amazing waterfalls.

It is imperative that we all: Local Authorities, residents, land owners, farmers and tourists who visit the area take responsibility for and special care to look after the environment for future generations. The importance of the Cambrian Mountains is nationally recognised, with more than fifty Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and six European Special Areas of Conservation totalling over 13,400 hectares. The habitats are also rich in wildlife with over 100 species of breeding bird recorded. The mountains were also the last refuge of the red kite in the British Isles - down to just a single breeding female in the 1930s. It was the wildness of the area and a few locals who saved it from extinction.

Chris is an experienced mountain leader and enjoys teaching elements of survival in the natural environment along with bushcraft - shelter building, foraging for food, sourcing drinking water and making fire using natural resources. Local walks with an overnight stay in the natural environment incorporating ecotherapy and /or bush craft is also possible.

Ecotherapy is a union between the ideas of ecopsychology and psychotherapy. Fundamental to ecotherapy is our connection to the natural world and the environment we live within. Ecotherapy uses a range of practices in order to help us connect with nature and ultimately with our 'inner life'. Personal distress can be alleviated by developing the mutual connection between inside and outside. Through learning to care for the natural environment we learn to care for and nurture ourselves. Ecotherapy is about personal healing and healing of the earth.

MIND Video - An Introduction to Ecotherapy

"Looking at the present state of the world, it is quite obvious that we are far removed from our original hunter-gatherer existence and have become increasingly alienated from the world of nature. The onset of the Cyber Age has added to this sense of alienation. The situation has worsened with the increasing urbanisation of the population.

We need to recognise that human well-being and ecological well-being are closely intertwined. Increasingly, human action is contributing to our planet's ecological deterioration. By relearning how to care for our natural environment, we can conquer the consequences of eco-stress - the inner deadness and self-alienation from the world."

The above wording quoted from Article 'Eco-therapy: The Walking and Talking Cure' from INSEAD

What happens when you are stressed?

Modern lifestyle as well as unresolved trauma are all sources of stress and harmful to wellbeing. When you are stressed, your body responds as though you are in danger. It produces hormones that speed up your heart, make you breathe faster, and give you a burst of energy. This is called the fight-or-flight stress response.

Some stress is normal and even useful. Stress can help if you are working to a deadline or need to react quickly.

However frequent or long term stress can have detrimental effects such as anxiety, headaches, an upset stomach, back pain, insomnia, chronic fatigue. Long term stress can weaken your immune system, making it harder to fight off disease. If you already have a health problem, stress may make it worse. It can also make you moody, tense, or depressed. Your relationships may suffer and you may not function so well at work. Stress if it persists over a long period of time becomes chronic and is termed as having "normalized". The constant low level flow of stress hormones will often lead to various illnesses manifesting including burn-out.

What can you do about stress?

The good news is that you can learn ways to manage and control stress:

  • Identify what causes stress in your life.
  • Look for ways to reduce the amount of stress in your life.
  • Learn healthy ways to relieve stress and reduce its harmful effects.

How do you measure your stress level?

Sometimes it is clear where stress is coming from such as during a major life change - the death of a loved one, getting married, having a baby, moving house, changing or losing a job etc. But other times it may not be so clear.

It's important to figure out what causes stress for you and it may be helpful to note down your responses to stressful situations in a journal. Write how you reacted and to what in order to evaluate whether you could have avoided the situation or dealt with it in a different way. This may assist you in identifying and reducing your stress levels as well as learning to handle challenging situations in a more positive way.

Food and Water that Supports Health

Our dietary choices are key to good health within all levels of our being. There is much information in the media about what comprises a 'good' diet and much of it written by ill-informed employees within marketing departments. The reality is that as a member of a species of the natural world your dietary needs for optimum health revolve around eating the appropriate whole foods sourced from the natural world. For many hundreds of thousands of years humans have eaten such a diet which varies according to seasons and the prevailing weather conditions of where they live.

It is only in the past hundred years or so that our modern world has dramatically changed how it produces foods. In addition a massive food processing industry has been created that prepares meals for us. It is an industry that revolves around selling as much as it can and making as much profit as it can. It will aim to use the cheapest ingredients possible and frequently substitute 'fillers' for food to save on cost. Many of the constituents are not found in nature and so not recognizable by the body - such as hydrogenated fats, nature identical flavours, additives, e numbers, pesticides and even added vitamins (in a chemical form that the body is unable to make use of). Quite simply processed foods stress the body. The body uses valuable resources to process them, detoxify and eliminate them.

We therefore only use products that we feel will support good health. This means that there are no chemicals or pesticides in the food we serve. We use unprocessed, organic oils (olive and coconut) that are not over heated so still retaining some nutritional value after cooking.

Our natural spring water supply does not contain chlorine, fluoride, nitrates, heavy metals or excreted pharmaceutical products as does most mains tap water.

Protecting Yourself from EMR and other Toxins

We can measure the levels of electrical / electromagnetic pollution and will give you advice as well as give assistance in reducing the harmful effects of the electromagnetic fields around you. We have tried to minimise the harmful effects and protect ourselves and therefore those who stay with us as much as possible. We have done this by putting in filters on the power circuits and reducing wifi output to a minimum. We use corded landline systems and put mobile devices in flight mode when not in use and/or switch them off at night. Read the following information if you'd like more information on this topic.

Radiation from the national grid power lines and substations down to even our domestic electrical wiring and equipment have all been found to adversely affect our biophysical and biological bodies. This can include damage to our DNA as well as physical stress leading to illness and disease. (World Health Organization Workshop on Electrical Hypersensitivity, 25-26 October, 2004)

Electrical or electromagnetic pollution are terms used to refer to a mix of low-level electromagnetic fields that exist in the modern environment. This pollution is also generated by mobile phones, wifi routers, tablets, laptops, power lines and cellular phone masts. You are never far away from a manmade electromagnetic field.

Put simply this is pollution from electrical sources. We are surrounded by electricity and radio waves in our homes, offices, and schools all the time. The use of electricity produces both an electric and magnetic field, commonly referred to as electromagnetic fields (EMF's).

Typical dangers from various types of electrical pollution are:

  • Electromagnetic Fields - these are possibly the most dangerous. They weaken the immune system and can make you susceptible to chronic illness. It is documented that they can lead to certain cancers and childhood leukaemia.
  • Electric Fields - these wear the body down. If you sleep in a bedroom with high electric fields, your sleep may be disturbed and your health may slowly diminish. You may develop a sensitivity to electric fields or electro-sensitivity (ES).
  • Microwave Radiation - has been shown to increase brain cancer in long-term users of wireless technology. People often begin to feel the effects of microwave radiation once their body has been weakened by magnetic and electric fields. This is called Electro Hyper-Sensitivity (EHS)
  • Dirty Electricity or (DE) - is associated with a host of illness. This is generated by the certain types of equipment connected to mains electricity, e.g. fluorescent lights, dimmer switches and switched mode power supplies as found in computers. People with dirty electricity in their home often complain of headaches and insomnia. Neurological issues and cancer have also been associated with dirty electricity.

Electromagnetic pollution is responsible for electro-sensitivity (ES) or electro-hypersensitivity (EHS). Common symptoms include:

  • Disruptive sleep patterns, Chronic fatigue, Depression
  • Cardiac palpitations and erratic blood pressure
  • Behavioural patterns in children
  • Skin complaints and or a warm or burning sensation in the face somewhat like feeling sunburnt
  • A tingling or prickling sensation across the face or other parts of the body
  • Extreme dryness of mucus membranes such as the back of the throat and eyes
  • A of the mucus membranes such as nose, throat, ears and sinuses without any infectious cause
  • Problems with concentration, loss of memory and dizziness
  • A feeling of impending influenza (flu) that somehow never quite breaks out
  • Aches and pains in muscles and joints, headaches and nausea, teeth and jaw pains
